Southern Region Prospective Plantings

ATHENS, GA. — The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) estimated corn planted area for all purposes in 2023 at 92.0 million acres, up 4 percent from last year. Soybean planted area is estimated at 87.5 million acres, up slightly from last year. All wheat planted area, at 49.9 million acres is up 9 percent from 2022. All cotton planted area for 2023 is estimated at 11.3 million acres, down 18 percent from last year.
Key findings for the Southern Region:
Alabama: Corn planted area for 2023 is estimated at 350,000 acres, up 17 percent from 2022. Cotton planted intentions are down 8 percent from last year at 400,000 acres. Peanuts are estimated at 170,000 acres, up 3 percent from 2022. Producers intend to plant 380,000 acres of soybeans, up 6 percent from last year. Winter wheat planted area is estimated at 210,000 acres, up 17 percent from last year.
Florida: Corn planted area for 2023 is estimated at 80,000 acres, down 6 percent from 2022. Cotton planted intentions are down 15 percent from last year at 90,000 acres. Peanuts are estimated at 165,000 acres, up 10 percent from 2022.
Georgia: Corn planted area for 2023 is estimated at 490,000 acres, up 15 percent from 2022. Cotton planted intentions are down 7 percent from last year at 1.20 million acres. Peanuts are estimated at 740,000 acres, up 8 percent from 2022. Producers intend to plant 170,000 acres of soybeans, up 3 percent from last year. Tobacco acreage, at 7,000 acres, is up 17 percent from last year. Winter wheat planted area is estimated at 170,000 acres, down 15 percent from last year.
South Carolina: Corn planted area for 2023 is estimated at 370,000 acres, up 16 percent from 2022. Cotton planted intentions are down 11 percent from last year at 240,000 acres. Peanuts are estimated at 85,000 acres, up 20 percent from 2022. Producers intend to plant 430,000 acres of soybeans, up 6 percent from last year. Tobacco acreage, at 7,000 acres, is up 21 percent from last year. Winter wheat planted area is estimated at 110,000 acres, down 8 percent from last year.
